Job Overview

Actuation Lab are looking for a project manager to join our growing team. The successful applicant will be working with our ambitious Engineering and Manufacturing team, and will be responsible for the planning and delivery of new and existing engineering projects on time and within budget. These projects will include both commercial and government-funded projects. The ideal candidate will be able to evidence previous successful management of engineering-related projects and have experience supporting the development of new hardware for industrial applications.

Actuation Lab embraces flexible working practices, while also believing in fostering a strong company culture through team interaction and group events. The successful applicant will be expected to spend most of their time working on site with the team in Bristol. Actuation Lab currently operates out of the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green, but will relocate within Bristol in Q1 2023.


Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • Project management of government-funded projects from application process through to project closure, including coordination with external consortium partners and reporting (including grant claim submissions and financial control of the project)
  • Regular project progress reporting internally and externally to the customer and other key stakeholders
  • Ensuring project documentation is generated and maintained in accordance with the requirements of the funder and other stakeholders
  • Defining viable project objectives, scope and deliverables
  • Identifying and quantifying project risks, mitigating actions and contingencies
  • Continuous improvement of project management tools, processes and methodologies
  • Working closely with senior management to ensure that projects remain within scope, schedule and budget
  • Development and continuous improvement of internal New Product Development process

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in managing engineering projects within a relevant sector
  • Experience working on large projects with multiple partners
  • Experience with project management tools
  • Experience of customer-facing project management
  • Experience managing New Product Development processes, including holding stage-gate reviews


Minimum Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree ؘ– Science of Engineering discipline preferred
  • Project management qualifications e.g. PRINCE2


Starting salary

£38,000 – £45,000 FTE, based on qualification and reviewed annually with performance.
